What are interpreters for deafblind people?

A deafblind interpreter or communicator guide adapts their communication to each person's remaining sight and hearing. Methods include deafblind manual, hands-on signing (hand-over-hand or hand-under-hand), visual frame signing for restricted vision, the block alphabet traced on the palm, and tracking, as well as Tadoma for those who read speech through touch. Communicator guides also offer practical guiding and one-to-one support with everyday tasks, appointments and getting about safely. Book experienced professionals who work confidently with all levels of combined sight and hearing loss.

Communication methods

The interpreters for deafblind people on EasyTerp work across a range of communication methods, adapting to each person's preferred way of communicating

Hands On signingAlso known as: hand-over-hand, hand-under-hand, tactile BSL

Hands On signing is a tactile form of British Sign Language where the deafblind person places their hands on the back of the signer’s hands to follow each sign through touch. Also known as hand-over-hand or hand-under-hand signing, or simply tactile BSL, it is most commonly used by people who were part of the Deaf community and lost their vision later in life, allowing them to continue using the sign language they already know.

Visual Frame signing

Visual Frame signing adapts British Sign Language so that every sign is made within a smaller, restricted area that fits the deafblind person’s remaining field of vision. The signer adjusts their position and the size of their signs to match, making it ideal for people with tunnel vision or conditions such as Usher syndrome who can still follow signing visually within a narrow frame.

Tracking

Tracking is a deafblind communication method where the person rests their hands lightly on the signer’s wrists or forearms to locate the signs while still following them visually. It helps people with a limited field of vision keep track of where each sign is made, bridging the gap between fully visual signing and tactile methods.

Deafblind ManualAlso known as: deafblind manual alphabet

The Deafblind Manual alphabet is a tactile form of fingerspelling where words are spelt out letter by letter onto the deafblind person’s palm and hand using set positions for each letter. It is used by people who know fingerspelling but can no longer see it, and it allows clear, precise communication of names, places and full sentences through touch alone.

BlockAlso known as: block alphabet

Block, sometimes called the block alphabet, involves drawing block capital letters one at a time onto the deafblind person’s palm with a fingertip. Because it requires no training, it is especially useful for communicating with people who do not know the deafblind manual alphabet, including members of the public, shop staff and others in everyday situations.

TadomaAlso known as: tactile lipreading

Tadoma is a form of tactile lipreading where the deafblind person places a hand on the speaker’s face, with the thumb near the lips and the fingers resting along the jaw, to feel the vibrations and movements of speech. It is rare today and is mainly used by some congenitally deafblind people who learnt the method from an early age.

Clear Speech

Clear Speech means speaking clearly, slowly and at close range in good lighting, with the speaker’s face fully visible and background noise kept to a minimum. It supports deafblind people who have some residual hearing and who lipread, making spoken communication as easy as possible to follow.
